October 3rd Threat Focus for Major Hurricane Matthew
•Matthew remains extremely dangerous category 4 hurricane this afternoon, located in the central Caribbean Sea with maximum sustained winds of 140mph. It will move between western Haiti and eastern Cuba toward a position in the central Bahamas by late Wednesday, weakening little as it does.
•Risks to the East Coast have increased today with a westward shift in Matthew's expected track. There is now only a roughly 50% chance that Matthew will stay offshore the U.S. coast, with the most likely point of impact in the Carolinas. The westward motion between days 3 and 5 increases the chances of an "east coast scrape" path, in which everyone from eastern Florida to New England sees direct impacts from the storm.
•Even if there is not a direct landfall, the hurricane could still have significant impacts along the U.S. East Coast. Eastern Florida will likely see showers and gusty winds starting on Wednesday, with the Carolinas likely to see inclement weather beginning on Friday. This situation should be monitored very, very carefully, as Matthew is likely to remain a major hurricane throughout this week.
•The next full forecast update will be issued Tuesday. In the meantime, please follow us on Facebook or Twitter for shorter updates and breaking news.
